Revolution in factories: Industry 4.0. (conference: Made in Wroclaw 2020) (translation)

What is the so-called fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) and what are the crucial trends associated with it? We asked companies directly involved in its development, some of which like FANUC and byteLAKE are going to exhibit their solutions during the upcoming, free, virtual conference Made in Wrocław 2020, on October 20–22, 2020.
The term “fourth industrial revolution” builds on the previous breakthroughs in the industries, directly related to the overall mechanization and the emergence of steam engines, followed by general electrification and the introduction of the first production lines into factories.
Never before, however, have the changes been as extensive as they are today. Industry 4.0 closely relates to, among others, digitization and large-scale data analytics (i.e. for production processes) as well as the implementation and deployments of mechanisms enhanced by artificial intelligence. In turn, these stimulate the development of industries that provide solutions helping create modern, “intelligent factories”.
Smart technology chains
One of the pillars of the fourth industrial revolution are factory investments in modern technologies. All over the world, also in Poland, we can observe that more and more companies focus, on one hand, on the construction of their production plants in accordance with the “guidelines” of Industry 4.0, and on the other hand, on the modernization of factories in order to optimize their operations.
Mateusz Amroziński, New Projects Specialist at FANUC, believes that the driving force of the fourth industrial revolution are chains of increasingly intelligent technologies. For producers and manufacturers operating in Poland, it is a unique opportunity to enter a higher level of productivity.
Industry 4.0 is also a challenge that requires a change in the approach to the design and operation of production systems, investments in modern technologies, as well as competent staff. The latest trends in industrial automation, such as innovative robots created by FANUC engineers in response to the dynamically changing needs of the global market, are also of great importance in the development of the factories of the future — says Mateusz Amroziński.
Industry 4.0 also means leveraging artificial intelligence mechanisms. Its implementation in the production process allows for the analytics of the data collected by, for example, sensors deployed on production lines. In turn, such analysis allows for obtaining information on how to optimize the company’s operation in areas such as safety or production efficiency.
Marcin Rojek, co-founder at byteLAKE believes that Industry 4.0 in Poland is no longer a distant future and that technologies and new opportunities it enables are already being implemented and used by many Polish companies.
One of the trends related to the fourth industrial revolution is the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and the so-called deep learning. In that context, AI has for instance become a foundation for intelligent cameras that help automate product quality controlling and devices monitoring or can detect dangerous events on production lines. Solutions like that increase the level of security of employees, but also of the companies as a whole. Moreover, they help optimize operations and increase overall efficiency of the factory. Digitization, another aspect of Industry 4.0, is about leveraging the so-called Big Data (i.e. processing huge amounts of data) in order to find hidden answers. Besides, digitization is also about office tasks automation, e.g. document processing. All of these translate into increased performance and efficiency— emphasizes Marcin Rojek.
Why is it so important?
Companies adopting Industry 4.0 solutions gain access to data that can help them establish a stable position in the market, an effort that is especially important in the era of the coronavirus pandemic.
Digital transformation, which includes technologies such as: big data, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, digital twins (virtual and augmented reality) or cloud computing, is aimed at increasing the predictability of market processes that affect the flourishing or decline of many enterprises — adds Przemysław Ozga from Production Manager.
